YouGuang Chinese School | Chinese Education Designed for Children Growing Up Overseas
Founded in 2022, YouGuang Chinese School provides systematic Chinese-language education for children ages 4–16, from early Chinese literacy through Level 1–8. Our programs cover reading comprehension, Chinese writing, speaking and communication, as well as Mandarin courses for children from non-Mandarin-speaking families.
YouGuang develops its own leveled curriculum and teaching materials, with a focus on building strong skills in Chinese literacy, reading, writing, and expression. We currently operate campuses in Richmond Hill and Oakville. Our Richmond Hill main campus is a privately owned facility of approximately 5,000 square feet, featuring a Chinese library, Youguang Theatre, children’s fitness area, multipurpose hall, and spacious classrooms. -
Helping Children Truly Learn Chinese—and Use It for Life
At YouGuang Chinese School, learning Chinese is not about memorizing isolated characters. It is a continuous learning journey. Children begin with Chinese literacy and gradually progress to reading comprehension, writing, and oral communication, building strong and well-rounded Chinese-language skills at each stage.
As their learning develops, we integrate reading aloud, discussion, public speaking, drama, and stage performance into Chinese lessons. These experiences help children turn the vocabulary, sentence structures, and reading skills they have learned into their own language, so they can use Chinese confidently in real contexts and express their ideas clearly.
Chinese is more than a language. It also connects children with their families, culture, and sense of identity. Our goal is not simply short-term academic progress, but to help children read Chinese, write in Chinese, communicate clearly, and continue using the language throughout their lives.

An Independently Developed Leveled Curriculum
YouGuang uses its own independently developed leveled Mandarin curriculum and teaching materials.
The curriculum was developed under the leadership of founder Ms. Yang Guang, together with a professional academic and curriculum development team. Team members include university professors specializing in Chinese language and linguistics, Chinese language education experts, and nationally recognized elementary Chinese language teachers.
Together, they have built a curriculum that combines expertise in language development, child cognition, classroom instruction, and the realities of learning Mandarin in an overseas environment.
Our teaching materials are specifically designed for children from Chinese-speaking and heritage-language families growing up outside China.
The curriculum takes into account the language environment children live in, the limited number of hours they can devote to Mandarin each week, and the cognitive and language-development characteristics of different age groups.
As a result, the level of difficulty, character-learning pace, vocabulary sequence, reading selections, and classroom tasks are designed to better match the actual needs of overseas learners.
The curriculum emphasizes structure, continuity, and long-term development, integrating:

* Vocabulary
* Reading
* Handwriting
* Spoken expression
* Cultural understanding
Students do not learn characters and vocabulary in isolation. Instead, they gradually build a complete and lasting foundation in Mandarin through reading, communication, writing, and meaningful language use.
YouGuang’s current curriculum spans Kindergarten through Level 8, followed by an advanced AP pathway.
Each level is supported by corresponding textbooks, workbooks, handwriting books, and online assignments, creating a complete learning system that connects classroom instruction with continued practice at home.
As students progress through the program, they continue to strengthen their Mandarin listening, speaking, reading, writing, and overall communication skills.
The curriculum also provides a strong foundation for future preparation for AP Chinese, HSK, and other Chinese-language proficiency assessments, as well as more advanced study in Chinese reading, writing, and communication.
