Tai Chi at YouGuang Summer Camp: Experiencing Chinese Culture Through Movement

01,Aug,2026

This week, YouGuang Summer Camp welcomed a special Chinese cultural experience: a Tai Chi workshop led by Samantha, who introduced students to the movements, rhythm, and philosophy of this traditional Chinese martial art. (有光中文学校)

Samantha has practiced Tai Chi for 10 years under Master Jenny Yee, a 20th-generation inheritor of Chen-style Tai Chi. Her training includes New Chen-style Tai Chi, New Yang-style Tai Chi, and Tai Chi sword. She has also earned medals at major martial arts competitions, including silver and bronze at the 2023 Pan American Wushu Championships and gold at the 2025 Canadian International Wushu Festival and National Championships. During the workshop, students began with basic stances, hand movements, and footwork. Although Tai Chi may appear slow and gentle, the children quickly discovered that each movement requires balance, concentration, coordination, and control. They followed Samantha carefully, learning how breathing and movement work together while experiencing the distinctive combination of softness and strength that defines Tai Chi. (有光中文学校)

Tai Chi is more than a traditional martial art. It also helps children develop body awareness, balance, coordination, and focus. More importantly, experiencing Tai Chi firsthand gives students a vivid and meaningful way to connect with Chinese culture. (有光中文学校)微信图片_20260731150800_642_35.jpg

At YouGuang, we believe learning Mandarin should extend far beyond textbooks and Chinese characters. Language is closely connected to culture, history, traditions, and everyday life. Through experiences such as Tai Chi, drama, guzheng, arts and crafts, and Chinese cooking, we aim to create engaging cultural environments where children can learn Mandarin through participation and build a deeper connection with Chinese culture.

We sincerely thank Samantha for bringing such a professional and engaging Tai Chi experience to our students. We hope this special workshop will become one of the many memorable moments of their summer at YouGuang.
