What happens when an older child wants to start learning Mandarin from the beginning?
This is a challenge many families face.
A 10-, 11-, or 12-year-old student may be a beginner in Mandarin, but that does not mean they should learn in the same environment as a five- or six-year-old beginner.
Their Mandarin levels may be similar, but their cognitive abilities, interests, maturity, and learning styles are very different.
Materials designed for younger children can often feel too childish for older students. Even when their Mandarin skills are at a beginner level, older children are already more mature in the way they think, learn, and interact with others.
This mismatch can quickly reduce motivation and make Mandarin learning less effective.
That is why we created the Accelerated Mandarin Program for Older Beginners, specifically for students ages 10 and above who have little or no prior Mandarin experience.

Learn with Students of a Similar Age
One of the most important features of this program is that older beginners learn alongside students in a similar age group.
They do not need to join a class designed primarily for much younger children simply because they are new to Mandarin.
The classroom environment, learning materials, discussions, activities, and teaching methods are all designed to better match the interests and developmental stage of older students.
This helps students feel more comfortable, engaged, and confident from the very beginning.
A Faster Learning Path for Older Students
Students ages 10 and above generally have stronger reasoning skills, memory, concentration, and learning strategies than younger beginners.
For this reason, our accelerated program does not simply take a young children’s curriculum and teach it faster.
Instead, the learning pace and instructional approach are specifically adapted for older beginners.
Our core approach is simple:
Complete approximately two years of regular curriculum in one academic year.
This allows students who begin Mandarin later to build their foundation more quickly and move toward age-appropriate Mandarin learning sooner.
Approximately 600 Chinese Characters in One Year
Students in the program are expected to learn approximately:
600 Chinese characters per academic year
On average, each class introduces approximately:
18 Chinese characters
Character learning is integrated with vocabulary, sentence structure, reading, comprehension, and spoken expression.
The goal is not simply to memorize more characters.
Our goal is to help students build a strong and functional Mandarin foundation within a shorter period of time, preparing them for more advanced reading, writing, and communication.

Two Years of Progress in One Year
For an older beginner, time matters.
Following the same pace as a much younger child may mean spending several years catching up before reaching learning materials that are appropriate for their age.
The accelerated program is designed to help students:
* Build a Mandarin foundation more quickly
* Progress toward age-appropriate learning sooner
* Avoid unnecessarily repetitive or overly childish materials
* Reduce the time required to catch up
* Lower the overall time and financial cost of learning
By increasing the pace while maintaining a structured curriculum, students can complete approximately two years of standard coursework within one academic year.

Starting Later Does Not Mean Learning More Slowly
Older beginners do not necessarily need to follow the same learning path as younger children.
They need a program that respects their age, maturity, learning ability, and pace.
The Accelerated Mandarin Program for Older Beginners was created for exactly this purpose:
to help students who start Mandarin later learn with peers their own age, progress at a faster and more appropriate pace, and build a strong Mandarin foundation efficiently.
They may be starting later—but they can take a smarter path forward.
