Chinese School in Oakville | YouGuang Chinese School
Small-Group Chinese Classes for Kids Ages 4–16 · Maximum 8 Students per Class
YouGuang Chinese School – Oakville Campus provides structured, long-term Chinese language education for children and teens ages 4–16.
As YouGuang’s demonstration campus, our Oakville location offers a small-group learning model with a maximum of 8 students per class. Students follow YouGuang’s independently developed curriculum and learning system, with more opportunities for individual attention, reading, interaction, and meaningful Chinese expression.

We place particular emphasis on the first years of a child’s Chinese learning journey, especially ages 4–6.
Our goal is not simply for children to “attend Chinese class” for two hours each week. We want them to enjoy Chinese, feel confident speaking it, develop strong reading foundations, and gradually build the ability to read, understand, write, and express themselves in Chinese.
From enjoying Chinese to truly being able to use it.
Why Oakville Families Choose YouGuang
Small Classes — Maximum 8 Students
Every class at our Oakville Campus is limited to 8 students.
For us, small-group learning is not simply about having fewer students in a classroom.
Children learn language through interaction, practice, feedback, and expression. A smaller class allows teachers to better understand each child’s current level, learning pace, and individual needs.
In a YouGuang small-group classroom, we want:
* every child to be known by their teacher;
* every child to have opportunities to speak and participate;
* learning difficulties to be noticed earlier;
* more time for reading, interaction, games, and collaborative learning;
* children with different learning speeds to receive appropriate support.
The real value of a small class is simple: every child can be seen.

Chinese for Ages 4–6: A Better Beginning
Parents often ask us:
What is a good age for a child to begin learning Chinese?
We place particular importance on ages 4–6.
At this age, Chinese learning should not simply mean sitting at a desk, memorizing characters, copying words, and completing worksheets.
YouGuang’s Early Years Chinese program introduces children to Chinese through age-appropriate stories, picture books, songs, games, interaction, early reading, and verbal expression.
Children gradually develop:
Chinese listening and comprehension;
everyday spoken Chinese;
early Chinese character recognition;
an interest in reading;
positive classroom habits;
and confidence using Chinese.
We do not rush young children into excessive writing or repetitive memorization simply to create short-term results.
At this stage, three things matter enormously:
Enjoy Chinese. Speak Chinese with confidence. Build the habit of continuing to learn Chinese.
A Classroom Designed for Young Children
Four- and five-year-olds do not learn in the same way as older students.
Our Early Years classes are therefore designed around the attention span, energy level, and developmental needs of young children. Structured learning is balanced with stories, movement, games, expression, and appropriate breaks.
We want children to think not:
“I have Chinese class again.”
but:
“I get to go to YouGuang today!”
From Early Years to Level 8
YouGuang offers much more than an introductory Chinese program.
After the Early Years stage, students can continue through our complete Level 1–8 Chinese curriculum, building their skills systematically year after year.
Beginning at Level 1, students typically learn approximately 300 Chinese characters per academic year, while progressively developing:
character recognition;
vocabulary and language use;
reading comprehension;
Chinese writing;
spoken expression;
organized communication;
and an understanding of Chinese language and culture.
Our goal is not simply to help children recognize more characters.
We build a long-term progression:
Character Recognition → Reading → Understanding → Thinking → Expression
Over time, Chinese should become more than a subject a child studies once a week. It should become a language the child can genuinely read, understand, and use.

A Chinese Curriculum Developed for Children Growing Up Overseas
Our Oakville Campus uses YouGuang’s independently developed Chinese curriculum, learning materials, practice resources, and online learning system.
Our curriculum was designed specifically around the realities of children growing up outside a Chinese-speaking environment.
Children in Canada have limited exposure to Chinese each week, and their home language environments vary considerably. A curriculum for these children therefore needs to be systematic, continuous, practical, and sustainable over many years.
We pay particular attention to:
the progression from character recognition to reading;
the connection between comprehension and expression;
systematic vocabulary development;
regular review and reinforcement;
and the connection between classroom learning and learning at home.
Our goal is not to make children learn “as much as possible” in a short period of time.
Our goal is to help them build Chinese proficiency that lasts.
Your Family Doesn’t Speak Mandarin at Home? Your Child Can Still Start Here.
Oakville is a diverse and multilingual community.
YouGuang therefore provides learning pathways for children from non-Mandarin-speaking families and complete beginners.
Our programs can be suitable for:
English-speaking families;
Cantonese-speaking families;
multilingual families;
mixed-language families;
children who rarely use Mandarin at home;
and children beginning Chinese with no previous experience.
We do not assume that every child already understands Mandarin.
Learning can begin with practical listening, vocabulary, communication, and everyday expression before gradually progressing into Chinese characters, reading, and more advanced language use.
Not speaking Chinese at home does not mean your child cannot begin learning Chinese.
From Learning Chinese to Using Chinese
We believe language learning should ultimately lead to meaningful communication.
That is why we care not only about how many characters a child recognizes or how many exercises they complete, but also whether they can:
understand what they hear;
understand what they read;
organize their thoughts;
and express those thoughts clearly in Chinese.
As students grow and their Chinese develops, lessons increasingly incorporate retelling, discussion, verbal expression, role-play, and other opportunities to actively use the language.
Chinese should not exist only inside a textbook.
To truly learn a language is to be able to use it.

YouGuang Chinese Performing Arts Ensemble
The Oakville Campus is also home to the YouGuang Chinese Performing Arts Ensemble, an enrichment program exclusively for current YouGuang students.
Through Chinese drama, poetry recitation, stage performance, and other creative experiences, students have opportunities to use Chinese in stories, characters, and performance.
Along the way, they also develop:
communication;
confidence;
teamwork;
responsibility;
persistence;
and the ability to express themselves in front of others.
We believe the value of the stage goes beyond putting on a performance.
It gives children an opportunity to discover that their voices deserve to be heard.
Built for Oakville Families
YouGuang is committed to building a long-term presence in Oakville.
Our newly renovated Oakville Campus has been designed around the learning needs of children, with new classroom furniture, teaching equipment, and a welcoming learning environment.
As YouGuang’s demonstration campus, Oakville is also where we will continue to introduce and refine new educational practices, student programs, community initiatives, and learning experiences.
Our goal is not simply to fill classrooms as quickly as possible.
It is to:
teach every class well, take every child seriously, and earn the trust of Oakville families year after year.

How Do We Treat Every Child?
At YouGuang, our teachers are encouraged to ask themselves one simple question:
“If this were my child, what would I do?”
When a child does not understand;
when a child is afraid to raise their hand for the first time;
when a child makes a mistake;
when a child makes even a small step forward—
we want our teachers to see not only the lesson plan, but the individual child in front of them.
Education requires standards and boundaries.
But good education also requires respect, patience, and genuine attention.
That is what we ask of our teachers, and what we promise our families.
Chinese Level Assessment Before Enrolment
YouGuang places students according to their actual Chinese proficiency rather than age alone.
For children with previous Chinese learning experience, we recommend a Chinese level assessment before enrolment so that we can place them in a class that best matches their current ability.
Assessments may be arranged online or in person, depending on the situation.
For children ages 4–6 who are just beginning Chinese, we focus on understanding their language environment, previous exposure to Chinese, and readiness for the classroom.
